Help us welcome the newest addition to the Kedron Battery™ family!
With exceptional cycle life, our new LiFePO4 (Lithium Iron Phosphate) batteries weigh about 50% less vs equivalent lead-acid battery models, and more importantly, can handle prolonged storage below 50% SOC and deep cycling without damage.
No sulfation. No stratification. Less worries.
*All-Season Performance heating function. When the internal temperature drops below zero, the system will keep the battery temperature within normal operating limits.
Manufactured specifically for off-grid energy storage, Kedron LiFePO4 will provide many years of reliable use when installed and used correctly.
Safety
The internal BMS (Battery Management System) includes many safety features to ensure the maximum efficient charging & discharging, while protecting the battery from damage due to potential unforeseen charge or discharge events. This includes:
- Overcharge protection
- Discharge protection
- Overcurrent protection
- Overtemperature protection
- Reverse polarity protection*
- Short-circuit protection*
*Every precaution should be taken to ensure connections are made properly and avoid the possibility of short-circuit events. While reverse polarity and short-circuit protections are active, activation may damage the battery.
Attention!
Failure to properly install Kedron LiFePO4 batteries and using the correct charging profile as outlined below can result in reduced performance or damage not covered under warranty.
Installation
Kedron LiFePO4 batteries need to be fully charged to 100% SOC individually using a quality 12v LiFePO4 (LFP) charger before cycling. This step is especially important when connecting multiple batteries in parallel or series, otherwise performance will suffer and users risk damaging the battery bank. Only charge with an approved LiFePO4 charge source.
The maximum supported series string is 4 batteries. The maximum supported parallel string is 4 batteries. Using a combination of parallel / series strings is not recommended. While this may seem work short-term, over time the battery voltage will become imbalanced and reduce performance. Installing the batteries using parallel / series connections like this will void warranty.
- Ensure connections are tight, and terminal connections torqued to 7.7Nm (68 IN-lbs). Inspect all connections often to ensure they are tight and clean. Loose connections can occur over time, and lead to terminal heating which can damage the battery or cause a fire.
- Ensure interconnect and load cables used are correctly sized for the specific application. Using undersized cables will reduce efficiency, affect the charge/discharge rate, and possibly cause battery damage.
- Ensure battery bank is protected with adequate fusing or breakers for the specific application.
- NEVER exceed the recommended maximum charge or discharge current.
- Batteries should be located in a dry, cool environment. Do not use in a sealed enclosure such as an insulated battery box. Do not place close to any heat source (stove, heater, etc) or long term in a location receiving direct sunlight. Never expose the battery to water or allow the battery to get wet.
Storage
Reduce SOC to between 30% to 50% and disconnect from the system if storing for extended periods of time. Be sure to store in a cool, dry place. If storing for more than 3 months, check battery voltage and recharge as necessary. Recharge fully to 100% SOC using a LiFePO4 battery charger before the battery is reconnected to the system.
The BMS will allow safe deep discharging of the battery approaching 0% SOC. It will however shut-down and stop discharging before 0% is reached to ensure the BMS has sufficient energy to operate. We recommend a maximum DOD set point of 10% unless your application specifically requires it.
For batteries that include the cold-weather operating feature: LiFePO4 battery systems by design will stop charging at 0C (32F) and will not discharge below -20C (-4F). This is a limitation of LiFePO4 chemistry. Batteries that have the cold-weather operating package include a heating function that activates when the internal battery temperature drops below freezing. The system will automatically use the charge source to keep the battery temperature within normal operating limits. It does not use internal battery power, it uses the external charge source power at a rate of approx 7.2A per battery which is triggered when the battery internal temperature drops below freezing. The heating will continue until the battery reaches an internal temperature of +5C (41F).
Immediately stop using the battery and disconnect from the system if the battery becomes hot, emits an unusual smell, changes shape, or appears abnormal for any reason.
Charging Profiles
For 12V systems:
- Recommended charge current limit = 50A
- Boost/bulk/absorb charging voltage (C.V. charging voltage) = 14.6V
- Float charging voltage = 14.6V
- Equalize charging voltage = 14.6V (Note: equalization is not used for LiFePO4 batteries. If needed, set "equalizing duration time" and "equalizing charging interval" to zero)
- Boost charge recovery voltage (aka rebulk) is 13.2V
- Low DC cut-off voltage = 10V (12.4V alarm recommended)
- Boost/bulk/absorb time = 120 minutes.
For 24V systems:
- Recommended charge current limit = 50A
- Boost/bulk/absorb charging voltage (C.V. charging voltage) = 29.2
- Float charging voltage = 29.2V
- Equalize charging voltage = 29.2 (Note: equalization is not used for LiFePO4 batteries. If needed, set "equalizing duration time" and "equalizing charging interval" to zero)
- Boost charge recovery voltage (aka rebulk) is 26.4
- Low DC cut-off voltage = 20V (24.8V alarm recommended)
- Boost/bulk/absorb time = 120 minutes.
For 48V systems (2019-2023):
- Recommended charge current limit = 50A
- Boost/bulk/absorb charging voltage (C.V. charging voltage) = 56V
- Float charging voltage = 56V
- Equalize charging voltage = 56V (Note: equalization is not used for LiFePO4 batteries. If needed, set "equalizing duration time" and "equalizing charging interval" to zero)
- Boost charge recovery voltage (aka rebulk) is 52.8V
- Low DC cut-off voltage = 42V (49.6V alarm recommended)
- Boost/bulk/absorb time = 120 minutes.
For 48V systems (2023+):
- Recommended charge current limit = 50A
- Boost/bulk/absorb charging voltage (C.V. charging voltage) = 58.4V
- Float charging voltage = 58.4V
- Equalize charging voltage = 58.4V (Note: equalization is not used for LiFePO4 batteries. If needed, set "equalizing duration time" and "equalizing charging interval" to zero)
- Boost charge recovery voltage (aka rebulk) is 53.2V
- Low DC cut-off voltage = 44.0V (51.2V alarm recommended)
- Boost/bulk/absorb time = 120 minutes.
Reset Procedure:
The battery BMS will disengage and prevent charging / discharging if repeated protection events are triggered. To reset, simply apply a LiFePO4 charge source greater than 1A. Note that for this to occur, there is likely a problem with the system setup and a review of all connections and charge profiles is recommended.
